Are you in the deep pain of substance abuse or alcohol? Are your behaviors affecting your job, your relationships and/or family? Are you lying to the important people in your life. Substance abuse is rampant in our culture. Often it carries deep shame, isolation, and denial. When working with any addict, I find it important to help them where they are at. It rarely helps to push people farther than where they are ready to go. It is also important to be willing to sit with someone when they are high. I encourage my clients to show up no matter how they feel. It is not useful at all to punish a person when dealing with addiction. If a person is just realizing there is a problem, then I will help reveal the affect the addiction is having on his or her life. When a person is ready to stop, I support the decision and provide the means of social support. This may include: Rallying a family around the individual, 12-step meetings, frequent sessions or phone calls, and creating a support network of family and friends that includes family therapy.
