What makes a relationship with someone of another race, religion
or ethnicity so challenging?

Often couples dealing with different backgrounds are not aware
of how much their conflicts may because of their differences.  
The differences often cause an imbalance in power.

For example in a mixed race couple where one of the partners is
of European origin, that person may not understand the
oppression the person of color has experienced in their life.  The
White person may not knowingly hurt their partner with
unconscious racism.
