The GLBT community has unique needs.  As a group of people that
have been oppressed by the culture, many times by our families and
peers.  It is important to seek counsling with someone who has similare
experiences.

A LGBT counselor can provide not only acceptance, but affirmation of
the life gay people have led.

"It is not enough to be accepted for being gay, I deserve to be celebrated
for my gayness, queerness, my feminine side, my masculine side and my
love for people of my own gender."

Any person of an oppressed group is more prone to having addiction
problems; it is important to have a therapist that understands this.  Yes,
each person needs to take respsonibiolity, but it is important to put our
own problems in proportion to the dysfunctional social environment that
we live in.

Gay and Lesbian couples have the same vision of a mutually supportive,
romantic, and emotionally intimate relationship as straight couples.
However, because of external or internalized homophobia, GLBT
persons may struggle with additional hurdles in forming healthy
relationships:
