A little about my upbringing, childhood, and personal life
I was born in Fresno, California. When I was nine, my family moved to Hawaii,
    where I attended public school.

Mom did not work outside the home. Dad was an entrepreneur, and worked
very long hours and we rarely saw him.

My childhood was rough, to say the least. I remember being very sensitive
to feelings from about age four.

After two years of college I decided to work in the travel industry. Here I
found friends and success. I became the top manager in the country for my
company (American Express) and moved to New York with my partner.

At age 39, I enrolled in college again to pursue a career in counseling. I am
    constantly working on self-improvement.

I currently live with my partner who has children from a previous marriage.

Interests and hobbies
Restoration of my Edwardian home occupies much of my time right now. I
enjoy painting and restoring the wood in the house to its original beauty.

Developing friendships with people is my main interest outside of work.
Sharing movies and theatre with friends is one of my favorite activities.

Why I became a therapy professional
On my own quest to help myself, I grew more and more interested in
counseling and psychology. Originally I wanted to be a teacher, because
this gave me opportunities to educate and help others.

In 1980 I worked in spiritual therapy. My teacher in San Francisco taught
techniques for clearing the mind and cognitive behavioral therapy.

This experience taught me the philosophy that changing your point of view
changes your life. I have come to realize that problems are often a result of
    your point of view.

My views on sharing personal information about me
I am willing to share information about myself if I feel it is in the best
interest of my client. Otherwise, I keep the sessions focused on the client.

What I regard as most important in a therapy relationship
The trust in a therapist/client relationship is most important. Trust allows a
client to share things that are deeply disturbing to her or him, and this
sharing allows the real work of healing to take place.

I strongly believe that whatever disturbs us teaches us. It is the unwanted
experiences that help me discover new things about myself and facilitate
growth in my life. Satisfaction in our lives can be the result of our struggles.

I believe that the client already has the answers to her or his problems. I am
merely the guide to finding these answers.

Example of what to expect at a first session in my San Francisco
counseling practice:
I welcome a new client by a special invitation into the room. To normalize
feelings, I share nervousness that usually exists in a first session.

This includes encouraging both of us to share our thoughts and feelings
about sitting together for the first time, as we start an important intimate
    relationship.

I always follow the client's lead, welcoming whatever way the conversation
    flows.

My priority is to develop trust and create a safe environment of compassion
and acceptance. People come in and talk to me about things they never
    reveal to others.
